HK coming in at #2, the killer is the sky high rents and international school fees for many unless you are on a cushy expat package. I have no problem shopping in Wanchai wet market for groceries as opposed to the higher end supermarkets....and you can bargain to get the price of that barbecued piglet down.

If you're on expat terms Tokyo is OK.
If you're not...it not a good place
to be.
Any place can be expensive...depends
on what you need...or think you need.

I find London not even making it to the list hard to believe. When I was thinking of moving to Hong Kong I was surprised that the rent for a studio was a good deal less than it would be in London. Nice digs in Hong Kong are crazy expensive though. For a room in a nice area of London you are looking at 700 quid plus these days. And for that price you have to share the bathroom and kitchen.
