A few months ago I heard on the wireless of a thought-provoking short story (I think, might have been a novel) about a city where everybody was happy at the expense of a child who was permanently locked in a cell. I think the author may have been Doris Lessing. Does anyone know what the work's called and who the author actually is? I'd like to read it.
Thanks

I believe it's The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin, and is a short story. Not read it myself but I believe one of the authors that influenced her was the Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges who wrote some great stuff which I studied years back and really enjoyed. If that sort of concept appeals you might like Borges' Ficciones, the English translations of his works are reasonable, and Fictions is well known. I recently bought a copy of Labyrinths while in UK as I lent my copy to someone a few years back and they lost it. There's a lot of the same short stories in each book. I came across it while looking for something else so bought it with the intention to reread. Cheers Fletch

Spot on. Thanks. An interesting (if rather short) read.
Can't say I'm familiar with Borges' works (or, for that matter the works of any Argentinian author). Will seek him out.
