It's a breach of aviation law - www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/ba-plane-fire-pilots-condemn-passengers-who-carried-baggage-from-burning-aircraft-10493667.htmlAfter 170 people safely evacuated from a British Airways jet ablaze on the runway in Las Vegas, pilots lambasted passengers who insisted on carrying cabin baggage as they evacuated the plane. A fire broke out in the port engine of the 26-year old Boeing 777-200 on the runway at McCarran airport. BA flight 2276 was departing from the Nevada city to Gatwick with 157 passengers and 13 crew on board. The captain, Chris Henkey from Reading, brought the aircraft to a halt and ordered an evacuation using the aircraft’s inflatable slides. Still photographs and video footage shows a number of passengers running from the burning plane with their cabin baggage, including wheeled suitcases, in breach of aviation law. One of the passengers was Sid Langley, a retired journalist from Northamptonshire. He later posted on Facebook that he “did the right thing, grabbed wife and ran,” while “other silly buggers fiddled around” retrieving hand luggage from overhead lockers. Would you have done it?

It is in the announcement and the fear is that baggage may impede a quick evacuation which should take a total of about 6 minutes for a full plane. On the other hand I have a video of the pilots of a plane throwing their baggage out the window to each other as their plane is being evacuated. I will try to find it. I must admit when I travel in India a train I was on was set on fire at Bhopal. I grabbed my daughter over one shoulder and one of the kids of a siek family on the same seat and made a dash off the train. I was a lot stronger those days. My thinking was that I could replace the goods but no one could replace what I carried. There were times after with the grief my daughter caused me I wondered if I made the right decision.

And the captain is right, while those people where p**sing around grabbing their bags other people could have been trapped and killed if things had gone badly
As long as you have your wallet in your pocket and your PP in your shirt pocket thats all you need
