If ( big if ) a single Thai lady was granted a tourist visa to the UK - what's the longest period it could be granted for?

Lot of ifs and depends. If it's for visiting relatives then max would be a multiple entry that lasts 10 years with a maximum stay of 6 months per time. Believe that's called a Visitors visa. Thing is Thai passports are only valid for 5 years. So that's the one I get for my wife 5 year multiple with 6 months max per trip.
Don't think marital status affects the length of the visa that can be obtained just the likelihood of getting it.
The UK visa system is quite whimsical with no hard and fast rules on criteria and its looked at case by case.
eg for my wife first time we got 6 months (unmarried), then 1 year, then 2 years. Then applied for 10 years but told no you can't have 10 you can only have 5. They took the application and money for 10 years but only issued 5 saying in your case 5 years was appropriate. In none of their rules is a difference in 5/10 year criteria listed and I'd even asked what's the difference in criteria for 5 and 10. No refunds.
If the lady in question hasn't been before and is unmarried and not visiting relatives I'd be surprised if she got more than one year.

Two friends here who are Asian, single, and work in a bank were denied a 30 day tourist visa to visit a friend in the U.K. both 32. Their other option is going on a group tour so waiting to see the outcome of that, neither wishes to do that as they want to spend time and make their own plans.

Naturally there was an indication that I should "sponsor," said application by saying the lady was my gf. Not a chance - I'm not getting involved with all those shenanigans. I'll leave that level of brain damage to others.

I used vfs ( sure it was them ) to apply to Oz for a tourist visa for my then lady. I'd booked a cruise leaving from Sydney - that was the prime reason. Anyway - it was rejected, so I went alone, much to her chagrin. On the bright side my fellow company directors wife is a travel agent - she pulled some strings and got me a refund on the unused proportion of the cruise. I thought it was a bit harsh of Oz to deny access so that a cruise could be taken.

UK and Australian visa laws can't be that much different. Basically if you are single and can't show a bank statement with x amount of funds in the bank or be sponsored you won't be allowed in. Seems odd but that's my understanding.

Years back when doing this first time and we used to apply at the British Embassy we were told that two of the biggest things they want to see are: 1)Reason/incentive to return to Thailand. i.e you're not going to stay in UK. So job in Thailand, own a house etc 2)Evidence that you won't become a drain on public resources and have the finances to support yourself

Theres a bit more to it than that, years ago i wrote letters for one of our lady engineers who wanted to go on holiday to Holland and then onwards to the UK, she had a full time job in Thailand, cash in the bank, regular decent salary and i wrote letters of reference being a "EU subject" she got the visa for Holland and knocked back on the UK one, The Dutch lot did call me to confirm a few things, The UK lot didnt even bother with a phone call just visa denied

The Home Office are aware ( I called them ) - and said they were discussing with the overseas government that is causing the hole in the system - to no avail so far. TBH - I was stunned. I'm not pubbing what it is because you can guarantee that someone will spread it immediately. What caused it? A political announcement that was made in haste and resulted in the UK turning passport and visa inspection over to a foreign country. And that country isn't insepcting them - seriously.

There is some announcement that was made by David Cameron about the UK being able to take in 10 000 Syrian refugees, good for them, but what about a simple tourist visa for Asians?
I know a few too who have been knocked back from Ozland also, no explanation.
