I agree with this: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34210002"Time spent travelling to and from first and last appointments by workers without a fixed office should be regarded as working time, the European Court of Justice has ruled. This time has not previously been considered as work by many employers. It means firms including those employing care workers, gas fitters and sales reps may be in breach of EU working time regulations. BBC legal correspondent Clive Coleman said it could have a "huge effect". "Employers may have to organise work schedules to ensure workers' first and last appointments are close to their homes," he added." I'm an employer - and I recognize the right to family life. That may sound ludicrious, but I know far too many people who spend all their lives on the road chasing rainbows because of stupid management. If the management had to pay for the travel time, they would be far more efficient and cost effective.

How the construction industry here has done it through the unions is accident insurance to and from work including life insurance. Then on a map you have 3 towns about 40km out of the main city, outside these 3 towns the employer pays full travel costs of petrol and hourly rate. Inside those 3 towns you still get a travel allowance but it's minimal of say 4 dollars a week or something but it adds up I suppose.

Fortunately for me I get paid door to door, but some companies specifically in the oil and gas industry are trying it on more and more especially if one is working through an agency.
That as well as only covering a set amount which is reclaimed only after you've gone out of your way of using your own hard earned cash, when your working for companies that are turning over millions daily, they always seem to penny pinch at the wrong end of the spectrum and think nothing of waiting two weeks for example for a container to arrive offshore before the job starts it's absolutely mind boggling when you sit in the rec room watching re runs of Pawn Stars and Shipping Wars on day rate.

Yeap in O&G the priorites are really messed up at times, the problem is these days its being run by accountants rather than O&G guys with a bit of common sense the way it used to be
