Excellent article here in the Telegraph, www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/11839416/I-was-abandoned-by-my-grey-gapper-parents.html"I found out that my parents were moving to the other side of the world by text message. “Have you heard about Vanuatu? Those intrepid parents of ours!” read the message from my younger brother, Peter. My first thought was, “Where on earth is Vanuatu?” My second thought was, “You mean mum and dad are leaving us all alone?” Gap years, round-the-world jaunts with a backpack and work placements overseas are no longer the preserve of students. A recent study found that the over 55s spend 40% more on foreign travel than those in the 34-54 group, while a Post Office survey reveals that a quarter of over 55s are seriously considering a so-called 'grey gap year’. Some empty nesters set off, iPads in hand, to faithfully tick sights and destinations off a long-held travel bucket-list. Others look for work or voluntary placements overseas; one third of globalvounteers.org participants are now over 55. The baby boomer generation have a love of travel, backed up with money and ambition, and many, like my parents, refuse to take retirement sitting down." .........continues

I say good on them. I've been in Vanuatu and it reminds me of West Africa. The locals are gentle, going on shy - and are blessed by living in a paradise - with the attendant dangers.
I year in Vanuatu? I'd do it - and Fiji too.
Good on them.

Good on them. My parents have had enough of the UK and are selling everything up to relocate to Amsterdam. They plan on spending their time cycling and traveling Europe by rail. Worked had all their lives, so all the power to them I say. Better than choosing to wait for death in front of the telly with a cup of Boveril
