Thinking of having a long weekend in Singapore in October. Kids off school and we haven't been there in years. Any recommendations? Places to stay? Things to do? Cheers Fletch

I normally stay at the Royal Plaza on Scotts, its always been a good hotel, but recently the owner (Sultan of Brunei) has gone a bit loonie tunes and closed the public bar, and took the free beer out the bar fridges, the business lounge still has booze or it did last time i was in there
But if not fussed about about the above its still a good hotel,
Things to do - touristy = Sentosa is good, the Singapore flyer good, Casino good = roof top bar/pool
Clarksquay is good - indochine my favorite restaurant is down there
Off the beaten path of a night, without family = Duxton Road = live rock music covers = JJ's

Book it for an after-dark flight - it's transformational from daytime. The Battle Box in Fort Canning is interesting - re-enacting the surrender of Singapore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_Box I also enjoy the Singapore National Museum - great place with the interactive guide. Enough in there to keep kids entertained. nationalmuseum.sg/A night ( Friday ) or day ( Sunday ) at the races is great fun - Singapore Turf Club - something diffferent for the kids again. www.turfclub.com.sg/Pages/Homepage.aspxAfternoon and evening at the infinity pool at Marina Sands? spectacular - again when the sun goes down it gets even better. www.marinabaysands.com/sands-skypark.htmlOne scene from the Battle Box

The flyer is well worth the price.

The new-ish Gardens By The Bay is definitely worth a visit. An interesting selection of often stunning plants and trees. Specifically built as a new tourist attraction for the city. Check the in flight magazine on your way there. There are often promotional entrance price offers available. Otherwise it's a bit expensive (but still well worth it). www.gardensbythebay.com.sg/en/home.htmlThe Night Safari is also very good. I'm sure the kids would love it. (I know I do, and I'm a bit of a big kid at heart.) The "Safari" bit of the name is a bit of a misnomer. It's just a zoo that's open in the evening with a small "train" running through it. You can also walk around (which I'd recommend if you have the time and energy). www.nightsafari.com.sg/

She liks that type of thing and also taking photos of plants/ trees. Night Safari is definitely on the agenda

UNIVERSAL - for the kids and big'uns, too. Tip : buy your entrance tickets in Chinatown (it's apparently a lot cheaper than at the place, itself). UNI opens at 10am? and is open until late evening - you won't want to leave. Also, buy your Singapore souvenirs in Chinatown, too - much cheaper than elsewhere.
Beware of the very cheap (and awful quality) of chocolate in some places. Buy at the proper stores - it's still very cheap.

Besides all of the above the Botanical Gardens, see this huge cannonball tree, Little India and the amazing temple. Lots of things to do. My trips there mostly business so anything was around the hotel.

Got back yesterday. Had a great time, although a bit rushed and could have done with longer. As we had only two full days - Friday night too late to do anything and Sunday flew home early morning, we decided to centre things around Sentosa, buying a 2 day fun pass - 1 day Universal studios + 1 day Sentosa pass with up to 20 free attractions. Friday did Universal Studios. Kids enjoyed it, but I think would have been even better if they were a bit older. Sentosa is much more complicated than it used to be, when I last went. Wasn't clear where to pick up the 2 day pass so it took a while to find the right "Waterfront" ticket office. Eventually found it just after 10am, and as Universal Studios didn't open until 10am anyway, we thought we might as well start there and do the 1 day Universal Studios for first day. Night time we went to the Night Safari, which the kids really enjoyed then we came home on the open top double decker bus which they really liked as they'd never been on a double decker bus before, let alone an open top one. We enjoyed Saturday even more. I'd added unlimited cable car rides to the ticket, so we went from Mount Faber to Sentosa. Great way to access Sentosa and kids loved it again a first time on a cable car. Much easier to sort the tickets that side of Sentosa. Then went on the Tiger Tower which has a great view of the island, which is also helpful for getting ideas of where to go. After that, Images of Singapore, Madame Tussauds. Then did Sentosa line for the cable car, S.E.A Aquarium, Butterfly Park, another cable car ride, Merlion, Wings of Time etc. Had some nice pictures taken with parrots - youngest loved that. Really could have done with longer even for just Sentosa. So will likely be back again at some point to do quite a few of the other things mentioned above outside Sentosa. Next time would probably like to chill a bit more with paces like the quays, zoo, Singapore Flyer. Cheers Fletch

Would add that Tiger Airlines was decent - particularly as it's a low cost carrier and I'm not a fan of those usually, but OK for short trips. You can tell it's Singaporean owned and run. Place we stayed was also decent. About 10mins /1km walk to Orchard Road, though Singapore weather isn't great for walking around too long in. Nice to have two bedrooms, with a lounge, 2 bathrooms etc, rather than be cramped in a single hotel room.
