Somkiat couldn't believe it. Four hundred kilometres he had driven to show off his bright new uniform to Yai. Every memory of Yai was of happiness, and long summers playing with the other kids in the village. Life in Bangkok was good enough, but you can't beat the countryside when you're a kid. And Yai always kept pigs - enough to keep herself and the rest of the villages in the area going. Somkiat was convinced she loved those pigs more than anyone else in her life - and yet, when it came to slaughter day, she ended their lives without a glimpse of emotion. Now, here she was, shaking with rage.
"Why are you here wearing that filth?" she screamed, reaching for her phone to harangue Somkiat's Meh for the sixth time today. Somkiat had wondered why Meh hadn't agreed to come visit this time - she was always keen to visit Yai before.
"Now she's not answering," growled Yai. "Somkiat, get back to Bangkok and hand that uniform back in. I haven't worked all these years to have a pig in the house - all that money wasted. Get back, and hand the uniform in - or don't ever come back here."
"But Yai, I thought you would be happy I joined the police?"
"If I want to wallow in sh*t I can roll about with the animals out back. Get out - no pigs in my house."

Have you ever noticed how much the police are detested by many Thai people? and rightfully so - for all we Westerners moan about being the victim of sharp practice, we are mere fleas on the elephants back. It's the Thais that pay the highest price.
Years ago my Mother suggested that I join the police.
"Not a chance," said my Dad. "You join the police and you opt out of society."
And that's in Western countries where they are a relatively benign influence. The hatred must run deeper in a country where they spend half their lives "taxing," the population.

Hmm not sure about that one from what I know about the village. In the police means respect and power. A symbol you made it. Actually more so than here in Australia. Here for example my bil is a cop and none of our side enjoy his company one bit. He's a nice enough guy, but you know.

They never escape the faint smell of contempt and hatred everywhere they go.

I have a cousin who's a copper. Lovely bloke but you always have to watch what you're saying..... Correct - I have two cousins that are coppers. My Uncle was appalled. One of them effed off to Adelaide police and my Uncle rejoiced - he didn't have to face the embarrassment of having him wander into the house in uniform. No different in Australia - when they put on that uniform they put on the Cloak of Scum. The smell never leaves no matter how many times they shower. Too cowardly to join a real service like the Fire Brigade or Armed Forces - too dangerous you see. Easier to just go out bullying drivers and setting people up on stupid charges. And till the day they die they can see the disdain in everyone's eyes. And it haunts them. <duck> them - they deserve it.
