Particularly not by those he clearly holds in low esteem – namely journalists and politicians. The general, who has the titles of both prime minister and head of the National Council for Peace and Order, has had a fractious relationship with the media since last year’s coup. He’s frustrated that journalists are not presenting the junta’s justification for its raison d’être. That is, that the military stepped in to end years of political turmoil fomented by querulous politicians – and that democracy will be restored after a new constitution curtailing the power of political parties has been approved. So the junta has been hauling in some prominent critics for “attitude adjustment” in military custody for up to seven days. The military likes to portray the summons as an “invitation” for a chat.
