Max had enough of this. Every mile in the motorbike lane felt like ten mile on a skating rink - or an obstacle course - depneding on whether someone had allowed their engine to drip oil all over the place, or had used the lane as a dumping ground for whatever they had deemed to be of no value. It was bad enough on a dry day, but today had seen an unexpected burst of rain - enough to have the worms racing to the surface for drink, and for the oil to make beautiful, dangerous, little rainbow coloured pools just where Max's tyres needed to be.
The rain was getting heavier, the road trip that seemed a great idea in the morning now misjudged. So Max pulled over to a coffee shop that appeared from nowhere on ths country road and decided to wait it out. Three coffees later, dusk was upon Max, and what seemed to be a river was upon what used to be the road.
"I think you should stay here, I have a room for rent" mentioned the young lady behind the counter. Max eyed her up, wondering if she was part of the deal. She was never going to be, it was thr four-hundred baht she was after, not a rollin the hay with whitey. Max could see that in her eyes, and contemplated the room rental sign she pointed at.
"400 baht, I could do without spending that," Max thought to himself. It's not easy getting by on 18,000 baht a month, making money online was tough. Even the unexpected purchase of three coffees had been painful for his wallet. Max demurred, and waited a bit longer till it was clear that he had overstayed his welcome.
"You sure you don't want to stay? Now it is dark and still wet." max didn't want to stay - forty minutes in the rain and he would be home, four hundred baht better off than the alternative. A little lull in the rain allowed Max to set off hoping for the best. It was only two minutes till he met the worst. Sideswiped at a junction on a pitch black road in the rain.
"I didn't see him," said the truck driver. The police just nodded, and that was it.
