Indeed true in truth none of us really enjoy change and the daily routine albeit humdrum at times is comforting, probably more so as one gets older. But having said that I personally find that when the change is forced upon me I have invariably adjusted to it quickly and found it enjoyable.

Will Self is an interesting writer.
From a privileged background, to self destruction, drugs and the rest.
He has , oh careful here, a true knowledge of going off the rails and how psychiatrists can make matters worse.
A very individual and relevant thinker, producing some of the few original writings today. My opinion.

To put my last comment in perspective; I was very fortunate, I think, in having excellent psychiatrists on two cataclysmic occasions.
No medication to ease the pain, but bloody hard work at facing my own inadequacies and dealing with them.
I know my step son is a very different case, but the treatment he receives in Thailand is dosing sedatives to the point he is a virtual zombie.
Agreed rather that than his aggressive, dangerous behaviour and I mean truly dangerous.
But the problem is not addressed.
Hang em high I say!

I too reached a point where I might have seeked a diamorphasisis in my misery only to be rescued from such an existence by a fabulous clinical psychologist.
But I really don't like to talk about it much.....preferring to savour the feel of wet grass underfoot or the sun in the morning or the satisfaction of looking at the stars while enjoying a late smoke on the terrace...

I'm in Edinburgh - near that statue of David Hume. He was best friends with Adam Smith and they used to get into withering arguments about religion. Both men were genuises, and both have statues on the Royal Mile. Well deserved.
As for the article, I agree.
