norwegian-bird-watchers-southern-thailand-112557903.htmlHas happened to me twice.
As a ten year old child, walking on the banks of an estuary, silly young me saw lovely sand and jumped onto it.
I sank up to my waist; parents pulled me out and were not amused.
Later in life , while on the Isle of Skye I was tracking a pair of golden eagles to record for the RSPB.
Found them and whist ready to photograph took one step too many into a sphagnum bog.
Impossible to get out, but fortunately my then wife was with me. No she did not have to lay down on the moss to extract me, a few hefty tugs. Ah those lovely green wellies are probably still in the bog!

One time driving from Colorado to California in my SWB 4x4.....Those roads are high, steep, and treacherous even when clear.....
Had my 4-6 year old daughter with me when they closed the roads behind us for ice and snow → everything closed and no sanctuary anywhere driving through snow and white outs.....The climb is so steep that they made the drivers of the 3 trailer trucks park them and evacuated most of the drivers earlier......
Only....
It was so windy cold and icy that the trucks slid backwards unattended down the roadway unable to maintain a grip in below zero blizzard conditions and I had to dodge them while they were sliding at me.....
I drove that for 12 hours up and down as we went over 12,000 feet with my daughter sleeping - it was so cold that the defroster couldn't keep ice from forming on the wipers so would build an ice bridge between the wiper blades and windshield so every so often I had to stop and knock it off by hand......
If we stopped we died - if I made a wrong brake or steering move we died - on a road I'd never been on before.....Never saw a light of any kind until the sun rose in the morning......Was happy to see it - it meant warmth.....Not a coffee drinker but that night ran on adrenilin eyes wide open all night long......Fortunately had aux lamps and strong headlights and their warmth kept them from icing over.....
Made it and was so amped up that when the rest/conk out time came grabbed a room but had a hungry active daughter and sleep was denied.....after 2 hours I gave up and was back on the road.....
The reason that one banzai trip became necessary is a whole other story....
Little did I know that that drive would take me to a very tragic discovery......
