Many of us are long term residents in Thailand and are aware of the silly laws and the lack of enforcement of them.
Yesterday , for the first time, (Ok Phansa - marks the end of the Buddhist 'Lent' and falls on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month (October). This is a day of joyful celebration and merit-making. For many families, it is also the day they welcome a son back into the home and celebrate his successful completion of a term in the temple. copy paste) , that a ban on alcohol has been imposed, even in hotels.
This sort of silliness has never bothered me, my local shop will sell any day, any time.
Yesterday though, I did not have my evening beer and chat at the local shop, opted for an orange juice. The owner was surprised as she was willing to sell.
I, did not want to take the risk. Had plenty of beer at home, but I like a social drink, not that alcohol dependent , that a day of abstinence would give me cold turkey.
I live in a close knit community, all Thai smiles and "friendliness", but I am sure there are some who behind the smiles would like to stab me in the back.
What an opportunity and a new one, backed by the new (old) powers that be.
I do not think I am getting paranoid, but am very careful now about what I say and do.
The way of the future?

Certainly seems to be a somewhat mixed up moment in time at the present.Having said that we have gone down these roads before and the bumps and the ruts have evened out as we progress forward. I am of the opinion we are in truth experiencing a

Inclined to agree with you there smokie. The old guard might well soon be getting on their bikes the way things are going. Or considering the age of many of them, their trikes.'' Both town and country trike models are shown below.

The last throw of the dice for the old guard imo. Whether or not (I think not), they will be on their way soon, there is a stronger xenophobia about now. Probably due to the internet and ideas circulated that are an anathema to the old guard. And true the oldest of the old guard are on their death beds, their successors are all positioning themselves. The propaganda has reached heights I have never experienced before and for the naive I suspect quite effective. I hope I am wrong.

I can't see the grip being loosened.
Other coups were political, this one isn't.

There were no political coups. There were establishment coups.
Dangerous ground , shut this blog down!

The western evolution, be it swiftly or prolonged is monarchy, divine right by inheritance, aristocracy, helping the divine ruler, who happened to be an idiot, but playing along, followed by a middle class uprising, control of finances, but opening the gates to class revolution. Ultimately this leads to meritocracy, but that offends the past rulers, They try to rein in these upstarts and the upstarts copy their masters. They become the new middle class, the new aristocracy in pursuit of divinity.
