In my travels I came to believe that the best foods anywhere are what might be called "peasant" food. They are made from what the locals can grow, forage, catch in the water, and so on. These are the foods I notice that the area is most famous for. What I think of as Chinese food, Mexican, Thai, Indian, Southern US, French, Greek, or even Cajun, and all of the others seem to be developed over time from what people have. In countries with big land masses and different climates such as China, Russia, India, Canada, the US, etc., the local food will vary too. My favorite Spicy Indian Chicken Curry (or maybe pork.) Recipe HERE
The next would be Southern US catfish and hushpuppies. Recipe Hushpuppies Southern fried catfish. Be sure to serve tartar sauce which I just buy in a store. Hushpuppies are a baking powder item made of wheat flour and cornmeal, flavorings added and deep fried. They are to die for. HERE are some more pictures. So, from anywhere in the world, what is your favorite food with cheap (to the locals of the area) food?

Cat fish and Hushpuppies, wow. I love that good Southern food. Had a great meal in Berkeley last year, of course not in The South, but a well known place for traditional southern food, was absolutely superb
Great post BTW

A Jiggs dinner is heaven for me, some call it a boiled supper.
Salt beef, cabbage and lots of root veg, good ole colemans and I'm in heaven.
Edit: I haven't figured out how to add a Picture using my phone apologies

I had smokie in a ramekin today with bacon and cheese sauce.
Scoop it out onto a slab of good brown bread and its heaven!
Home sweet home....

Here's another that definitely fits the bill. I like these best with crab, but they are very good with shrimp instead. I make enough for leftovers because they nuke well and even make a great hamburger type sandwich flavored with tartar sauce. Crab CakesPictures
