It's started early here in Glasgow - the main display is taking place tonight as there is a big football match on tomorrow in the same vicinity as Glasgow Green -
Organized displays have grown in popularity, when I was young fireworks would be set up in milk bottles in the back garden, and the wee bonfire lit.
There would always be a big bonfire in the area, built mainly by kids, with Dad's having a final input.
The acrid smell of smoke, along with the lingering smell of burnt powder live long in the memory. We kids would be endlessly fascinated by sparklers, Catherine Wheels et al.
These days it's illegal to have private bonfires - health and safety you know.
Is Bonfire Night better now?
On the whole I'd say yes - some of the big displays are magic.
Great family nights out.
But some of the innocence and excitement has gone.
I suppose that's progress.

A sparkler or two and a sausage off of the barbecue in the back garden....great fun....and then a couple of rockets to end the evening off.
These big displays now are quite something though!

Amazing one here in Glasgow tonight - and the good news is there are displays in surrounding areas tomorrow to kids can get a double-feast this year

Best night of the year and a brilliant excuse for burning Catholics.

I was explaining to the kids in the car this morning about bonfire night, collecting firewood, making a bonfire, treacle toffee, making a guy, fireworks etc etc. They said it sounds fun. Yes it was.
Then I said I'm not sure whether it's legal now in the UK. So sounds like the private ones no longer are - miserable ****s
The other thing is Thailand doesn't have much in the way of festivals and events specifically aimed at kids. Christmas is OK but not as special, no chance of snow either, no Easter eggs, no bonfire night... Felt a bit sorry for them in some ways when I think of the magic that is missing for kids in Thailand. These things were great growing up...

No magic for kids in Thailand..you need to get out more...there is more than balance sheets here. Have you ever seen the magic of a kid at LoyKratong gently placing a kratong he or she has made with his own hands and seeing it float away in a sea of lights........nothing for kids Bah.Humbug Have you ever seen the magic of a kid at LoyKratong holding one side of a cloth hot air baloon oftthen with the other side held by her father then releaing it to float up amnong all of the other new stars in the sky. Have you ever seen the joy in a child at Songram armed with a cheap water pistol and a bucket of water with a world full of willing targets. Nothing in Thailand for Children.....think again.

Hehe you're right, and yes have seen those. Yet at the same time not so. Us wizards choose our words carefully: Songkran, Loy Kratong etc they are nice festivals but they weren't aimed specifically at kids although kids do take part and enjoy. Us wizards take a great pride in magic. Krathongs can be lovely and water fights fun but that's not really kids magic is it? Now Father Xmas, the Easter Bunny, the tooth Fairy, snowman coming to life at night when you're asleep, and what they achieve and the way they do it, That's real magic and make believe ... and if Guy Fawkes or anyone else manages to blow up the Houses of Parliament with all the politicians in... That would be <duck>ing magic

Best night of the year and a brilliant excuse for burning Catholics. Being one I guess I stay home, lock the door and start muttering about the stake being too good for protestant heretics. BTW a just passed away man was shown around by St. Peter. 'Here we have innocent children' pointing to a playground. Further on he pointed to rooms for this sect and that sect. Walking a bit more St. Peter suddenly whispered 'do be quiet when we pass here'. the man 'asks 'why?'. 'Well, here we have catholics and they think they're the only ones here.' Stay cool and keep smiling

Had bonfire night or Guy Fawkes night growing up in Australia. We could buy the fireworks at the supermarket then. It was banned here years ago sadly. Ruined.

Any serious attempt to rid us of government should be celebrated!
