Sounds Pricey: Sennheiser's $50,000 Headphones Only 250 pairs of Sennheiser's new headphones - billed as the best in the world - will be produced, but they come at a price. Attachment DeletedA newly released pair of headphones could be the best ever made - but will set you back an eye-watering $50,000 (£32,400). Sennheiser's Orpheus headphones have 6,000 individual components including gold-vapourised ceramic electrodes, platinum-vapourised diaphragms, and Carrara marble amplifier housing from Italy. They are the successor to the Orpheus HE90 headphones which were released in 1991 and were widely regarded as the best headphones around. Only 300 pairs were ever made, and even today a second-hand pair will set you back several thousand pounds. When you turn on the power on the new Orpheus, chromium-plated brass knobs extend from the amplifier housing and the eight quartz-encased vacuum tubes rise from the base and start to glow. And there are eight digital-to-analog converters to get the best sound from low-quality music streams. Sennheiser says the headphones will be produced from next year, with a limited run of 250 produced each year. While audiophiles are notoriously hard to please, Sennheiser makes a bold claim about their quality. A statement said: "They are the best headphones in the world. Sennheiser is presenting new high-end headphones that offer an unprecedented audio experience. "The electrostatic headphone system combines to perfection the most innovative technology with carefully selected, luxurious materials and highest quality craftsmanship." news.sky.com/story/1581587/sounds-pricey-sennheisers-50000-headphones

Lovely headphones they make. I had a 400 dollar pair that sounded fantastic but I'd rate them near the same sound quality as the iPod headphones just slightly more full sounding.
Anyway if you have a spare 50k and nothing better to buy, why not.

I have the USD 400 ones and a pair of Shure SE 315 "pro" ear buds, the same musicians use on stage, and the jury is out as to which is better, but i hedge towards the Shure ones soundwise, and they have a very long cable but the biggest advantage is you can replace the cable only if it gets damaged Originally I wanted the SE 846's, but f'ed if I am paying USD 1200 for a pair of ear buds to plug into a crappy I-Plod Attachment Deleted

Digital recordings are just a wee bit too crisp.

I would prefer to give mine away to fellow fans and collectors, my mrs is sitting on a small fortune and doesnt even know it. Throw in concert programmes, etc etc, and yes she would probably just bin the lot without a clue she was throwing good money out the door.
