Issues with the laptop staring in default mode not in administrator mode, which means my desktop icons are wiped out and many other functions have died. it's a Samsung a couple of years old. One time it stared up and the whole screen was black with only the bits down the bottom showing. Restarting it again it went back to the blue windows screen but default again. Does it have some malaware/trojan in it no idea what is happening just not going to shut it down as that seems to set it off doing strange things. Anybody know how I can change it to starting in administrator mode? I don't have permissions to open files in default it's reverted to using IE which I bloody hate and Chrome won't open. Monday it's going to the shop but interim any ideas? 'Before you marry a person, you should make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are.'.....Will Ferrell Tweak that to using a computer which plays up.

It would help to know - which operating system - when you say 'default mode' do you mean the system is trying to get into what you'd see normally, or 'safe mode' where it says something about problems and offering you the option to boot into 'just the OS', 'OS with some stuff', 'OS with networking' - what did you do lastly when all still worked - assuming you need to 'logon' can you login as administrator? PS reading about IE and Chrome I can only assume you no longer use Windows 3.1 ? - Windoze 7 Ultimate
- When I try to open a program, for example CCleaner, the message in the yellow box says: 'You do not have permission to open this file, contact administrator.'
- my D drive was completely wiped out, I panicked as I thought I lost everything but found them in C/users/administrator
- I did get Torch/Google up and running but all my bookmarks are gone.
- there is no other user on this laptop, so asking me to contact administrator is odd. - bunch of weird Chinese pop ups.
P.S My husband is in Shanghai with the boys and he suggested I may have surfed some Chinese site and got spyware/malaware in the system and to shut it down. I have all the anti virus things on so dunno.

Try a system restore, if you have back ups set.

Having all the antispy, anti-addware, anti-whatever helps but isn't foolproof, not even faultproof.
If there's important stuff on the laptop try to backup on a USB memory stick or CD/DVD and switch off. A 'repairman' can boot from his own 'special' system which normally allows to copy things as well. Further use now risks loss of data.
BTW if you can backup data, a thorough scan on the media would be required before you can do anything with it.

Will take it to the Samsung guy, special system to copy is what I need as some things are not backed up. Thanks to both of you.

I'm not trying to be mean (honestly), but without the laptop you have the rather unique opportunity to do whatever you did before you had it. Maybe even read a book

Back up to another medium if you can Go into start menu right click computer and choose manage In the tabs at the side click local users and groups then click the users folder Do you see any rogue user accounts there? Maybe someone shelled in with armitage/metasploit Download this and post a copy of the log file (can be found in the same directory you ran it from) www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/PS. Put a piece of tape over your webcam, your cam, mic and what your viewing on screen can all be seen and captured if someone has gained access So avoid flicking prawns in front of the laptop

The passwords are not 'Ilovemum' Passwords tend to be case sensitive. Try "IloveMum"

Mind you, the laptop should be kept "offline" now and just powered off. Remove battery pack should be unnecessary, but with UEFI BIOS you never know.
