"If the blood vessel in Gary Dowley's brain had burst just a little bit sooner, or even a little bit later, the Brisbane man wouldn't be lying in a Thailand hospital waiting for an operation to save his life. But Mr Dowley had the double misfortune to not only suffer an aneurysm while on holiday; he did so while riding a motorcycle. As such, his travel insurance has classified Mr Dowley's treatment as the result of a motorbike crash, and adjusted the amount of money it pays out accordingly. Another section to the story -
If he needs an operation, that will cost us $16,000.
"He has money in his super account, but getting that is a long process and these doctors won't listen to us when we say we will get the money, it is basically a case of you pay the money now or he stays here until he passes away."
...............................................
I'm in the fortunate position where several members of my family could bail me out if non compos mentis.
However, my sister also has full power of attorney registered. That way she can access my bank accounts if something similar happened to me.
There's no point being fully insured/funded if no one can access either if you are in a coma - what a level of stress to give your family.

Its hard to believe a call from the family to his bank manager in Australia wouldn't sort this out within an hour.

Go try to get money out of your brothers account saying that he's not well and can't communicate with the bank. Not.A.Chance.

Brother - "There's £10,000 missing from my account."
Bank - "Oh, your brother came in and said you weren't well, and we had to give him £10,000 towards your medical bills."
"What?"
"Oh shit."

In a situation like this you would think a bit of correspondence with the Thai hospital might be in order for the bank manager. Just sayin'.

I would suggest ( with all die respect, which translates into - get a grip of yourself, you numpty ) - that the Australian family has already tried that. And oh - look at that - it didnae work . From the article - "He has money in his super account, but getting that is a long process." It wouldn't be a long process of the family had a registered POA. Just sayin'

Hospital costs of A$ 4,000 per night, yeah right.
Best he gets himself to a gov't hospital asap.
Some of these places are nothing more than money making machines.

So between the whole family they can't get 16k together?
Even with a registered poa getting super out in Aus certainly is a long very drawn out process taking months, closer to a year.
