It's not necessarily all about money. It's about sense a sense of worth and being capable of doing things independent of your partner, contributing something out there. If I wanted to do the sit-at-home wife rort I could have done it years ago, my MIL thinks a working wife reflects badly on him as he doesn't make enough money to 'allow' me to sit at home, which is hilarious all things into consideration.
As to financial power there is nothing he wouldn't do for me but I like to do things on my own, never been one to leech off a man even though we're married.

It's the independence and self-reliance I would treasure. We are in agreement.

Very much so.
Maybe I'm perceived as a snob by the expat wives here and sure I am, most of them educated with degrees and with good jobs they gave up to be totally servicing the husband's 'needs', or those who sought out wealthy guys to get the lifestyle. Do men get bored with these types, probably my take.
On the flipside, an Aussie acquaintance who many years ago got himself a Filipina mail order bride, brought out her whole family to Ozland, opened up a chain of dry cleaning businesses and put them all to work. Which is OK and he was the one sitting home watching TV drinking beer, set himself up good some thought.
