I was talking to a Thai woman recently that said the first winter she had in North East England was shocking. She worked in a factory, and in her first week there she was walking up a hill towards it in a winter gale. The wind was so strong she had to grip onto a fence and wait on it subsiding before moving on.
She said she stood there and cried - wondering why she had agreed to live in the UK. After a few weeks she called her Mum in tears - and her Mum said -
"Be strong - everyone in the world has to work. Nothing comes free."
This lady reckons that ( possibly controversially for some ) - Western men make a rod for their own back if they don't allow/insist on their wives working. She says in her experience, the women that work appreciate the reality of life in the UK. They appreciate fast that it's not easy - and that not every "farang," is a millionaire.
Whereas those that stay at home having everything delivered to them on a plate appreciate nothing.

Ah the stories I could tell you.
I know women in the UK/Australia/USA who have intention of moving back to Thailand.
What the woman was too polite to tell you was, those women who dont work were unemployable in Thailand, ergo why would they suddenly become employable in the West.
Work out what the above means, it may be too cryptic for you, heres a clue, its says more about where they met their Knight in Shining Armour.
For others working,it maybe as a means of sending money back to Thailand to support hammock swingers, how much do they actually contribute to the marriage?
My mrs was called a snob because she didnt stay home and play cards and drink whisky all day, thats before we even get into money lending and other nefarious activities.
Personally the 2 week millionaires only have themselves to blame. They come here and throw money around like a drunken sailor on shore leave, can you really blame these women? Idiots throwing the equivalent of a months wages behind a bar every night, no wonder Little Lek is impressed

She said that once she got her head round the weather she had to deal with a bit of latent racism ( my phrase ) where she was asked to do all the menial jobs others wouldn't do. Not knowing any better, she cleaned the toilets when the cleaner was off sick, ran around doing the tidy up work in the factory, as well as her own job. Then the penny dropped. Her husband wrote a letter to head office asking their thoughts on what was happening to her on the work floor - and that set a hare running. Good on her for sussing she was being taken for a ride - good on him for doing something about it.

Wouldnt call it racism, happens in most places, if you are daft enough to do someone elses job, they will let you.
I learned years ago, if you do someone elses job, it now becomes your job.
An innocent abroad springs to mind, nothing more than naive.

^^^, concur, hence the reason he did it, he knew no doubt the other women would have told him to poke it, or swivel.
I will wager he doesnt give her a mop now.

Anway, not yet discussed, the farangs that marry these women then treat them like shyt.
Was talking to a girl in a bar years ago.
She had married some Scandi 2 week millionaire type.
She went to live there, transpired the guy lived in some flat with his mother in the middle of nowhere, he worked on the rigs, he didnt want a wife, he wanted someone to look after his aging mother while he worked offshore.
Another girl, spoke very posh English, had lived in the UK for a few years, married to an older guy, he died, family successfully contested the will, poor girl ended up with nothing, ripped off by his money grabbing family.

The broader point is -
Is it better to encourage your wife work whether in Thailand or your own country?
I'm defo in the yes camp.

Of course if she's still of working age and healthy, go work. Speaking for my wife, she'd go crazy staying home all day.
Plus no way I'm supporting laziness.

I am of the opinion, if you have to encourage your wife to work, you probably have problems. Its all in the selcetion process. How the heck did these non working women ever support themselves in Thailand? I would never encourage any woman to work, if she is work shy, I want nothing to do with her.

A woman who rides on her husband's gravy train and makes no effort to find a situation for herself if she can, is no better than a gold digger. Plenty of those around here both gweilos and HongKongnese alike who love the stay at home lunches/shopping/tennis life, drivers, nannies and helpers for the kids. 'Work' is somehow seen as a class thing. I'd be bored out of my head.

I'd be out working or growing my own business.
