This small hippy town is essentially becoming akin to the backpacking mecca Khao San Road, combining Bangkok’s famed tourist fanfare with Pai’s nightly market that runs through the main drag of town, the presence of cheap accommodation on a super-tight budget and its chilled night-life that is slowly catching wind with backpackers from all over the world. Located just three hours west of Chiag Mai, this sleepy countryside town is set among rice paddies along the bank of the Pai River and can easily rival Laos’ infamous backpacker destination Vang Vieng in terms of scenery and relaxed backpacker vibe. However, likewise with the controversial past of Vang Vieng, Pai has also had its fair share of troubles. The Pai region was once a haven for opium. The 70s was the era of the Golden Triangle drug trafficking trade, led by the infamous Burmese drug war lord Khun Sa, the world’s biggest drug smuggler of the time.........."
