Came from a fairground pikey family as I recall, not a particularly pleasnt person in real life either although in his early days a fine comedian.
Some links below to a series that was a fine entertainment a long while back and no P.C. either.

Bernard Manning was a crude racist of the lowest order. By my reckoning, he never said anything that was remotely funny. His material consisted of racism, sexism, shock (by use of crudities) and generally making fun of people who are different to him, including the handicapped and cripples. Having the profession of comedian and not being in the slightest funny must have been what made him so bitter. Nasty man on stage and nasty man in real life.
