Some of you may be aware that the bars are being forced to close at 12 - and that's damaging the tourist trade among a certain demographic.
I'm not fussed as I'm not here to go drinking all night this time round - but my ex-girlfriend told me yesterday that she had to lay off 22 promotion girls. She says that hundreds of people have lost their jobs in the drinks trade.
And for what? spite against the Red Shirts of CM as some contend?
I reckon it's related to the UNESCO world heritage site application - I think that CM is trying to move in a different tourist direction.
While I do believe that CM deserves UNESCO status I feel a couple of important conditions should be attached - the first being the removal of overhead wires around the moat and within the Old City - the second being the scandalous growth in traffic. The first one is only a question of will and application - the second is going to take a lot of thought. My solution? make the inner ring and the outer ring two way.
Ban all songthaews and Tuk Tuks from the inner ring - and replace them with quaint tourist buses - the road-going tram style - and have them going around the moat and across the old city, using the gates as mini-terminals.
Within the moat and old city it should be pass-holder vehicles only. That would transform the inner-ring and old city. The outer ring? chaos for a while - and it would be up to the city masters to create a new series or arterial routes so that crossing town would not include using the moat.
