I've been talking to three guys I know who work in the oil trade - and this $40 a barrel malarkey has them worried. One of them has been on home leave/retainer for three months - and reckons that much longer of this and he will be let go.
The other is working in China and hating every minute of it, but is thankful for a job at all. The last guy is a medic in Abu Dhabi and his job is as secure as can be - except there's now a glut of qualified guys in his field. He fears the old pal's act seeing him being replaced.
On the bright side all three were wise enough to make bank in the good times. I bet there's some out there that can't say the same.

Som nam na indeed -
I was talking to a guy last week who was telling me he lived in the UK and worked 28/28 in Western Australian mines.
I wouldn't fancy spending half my life on a lunar landscape.

Dont know about Oz these days, my nephew jacked in his job in the mines and is now studying to be a lawyer. Plenty like him, thankfully the ones with a trade or qualifications behind them have something to fall back on, it seems to be the cling on types with no skills that are effed.

I'm pleased that the contraction in the commodity sector has brought a lot of very loud, very obnoxious people back down to earth with a very nasty bump.
