The bus in which at least 16 Malaysian tourists were killed was steered by a rogue driver who was fleeing from an earlier accident and ran off the road in Chiang Mai province on Sunday. The incident happened on Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Highway (Highway No.118) in Ban Pan Fan village of Pa Miang sub-district in Doi Saket at about 11.30pm, said Chatchai Promlert, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. The Thai driver of the bus had reportedly hit another vehicle in Mae Khajan area of Chiang Rai and tried to escape. The road chase by the other vehicle caused the bus driver to speed up and lose control. The bus hit a passenger car and then a power pole before plunging at speed off the road. The bus, registered in Chiang Mai with the licence plate number 30-0485, was heading from Chiang Rai province to Chiang Mai. The Doi Saket part of that road is generally straight forward as compared to the stretch above. I've been on a bus driven by a maniac on that road and it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.

Urgh, Thai bus rides, only take them when planes don't go there.
If no other choice, sit me next to monks up the back and hope the truck tailgating has brakes.
RIP to the poor souls.
