Lambs of the world, rejoice - Lamb roasts have formed the centerpiece for generations of Christmas dinners in Australia and New Zealand, but fewer will be gracing dining tables this year. Consumption of lamb chops and roasts has declined in favor of more pork and chicken as Australians and New Zealanders are priced out of the market for a protein produced in their own backyard. Australia lamb prices in 2015 were the second highest on record and have risen on average 6.4% from 2014, according to the National Trade Lamb Indicator. Industry groups expect further increases as demand from the U.S. and the Middle East continues to grow. “Ninety-two percent of the lamb that is produced in New Zealand is exported so the price here is absolutely driven by the price offshore,” said Rod Slater, chief executive officer of New Zealand industry group Beef + Lamb. “Lamb per se has become more and more in demand,” tightening supply and pushing prices higher. Bugger all people I know can afford to eat lamb, which is amazing, as it once was one of the cheapest options going around.

One of my few memories of the EU referendum in the UK back in the seventies was my Dad raging about the result meaning that our long-standing relationship with, for example, NZ lamb producers, was threatened. A betrayal, he called it.

Lamb you say?
Now I'm not a lamb fan but the price of croc is going down. Before I left HK a nice little croc you could make steaks out of was going for HK49/jin not bad. They'd even whack it over the head for you and cut it up if you asked. A nice whole croc roast, macerated overnight and stuffed is really great in the Weber. Can't buy it in Sydney sadly and I did go hunting in Chinatown.

Haven't looked apart from Chinatown. I think last year having one in the bathtub mouth trussed up put my mum off. That was a gift from friends with a restaurant who moved.
Lamb is cheaper in Adelaide hippity, price hikes here. Turkey breast is lovely as are all the side dishes. New Year is the big one food wise more so than Christmas.
