Has anybody stayed/lived in Chumphon? Looking for somewhere to spend a few days in, outside Bangkok. Am open to any suggestions

It's much like any other Thai town,there is a number of permanent expats that reside there and a few western style coffee shops and restaurants.
It gets many backpackers passing through on their way to the islands.
Nothing exceptional about the place,would be OK to kick back for a few days and do some people watching over a cold beer or an iced coffee.
The food will be predominantly more spicy and have a more Muslim feel to it,this is where the southern Muslim population really starts to be more prevelant.

Rather than head so far down the coast,although flying is an option I guess from Bangkok.
Jump on a bus to Prachuap Khiri Khan and relax on Ao Mano beach,quality seafood,fantastic beach,relatively in expensive.
