One of the most popular holiday destinations in south-east Asia, Thailand lures around 20 million travellers every year, including 900,000 Britons, thanks to its clear seas, white sand beaches, excellent diving and relaxed pace of life. But the double murder last year of British backpackers David Miller and Hannah Witheridge – for which two Burmese workers have now been sentenced to death – may make travellers consider whether or not they still wish to visit. The Foreign Office does not currently advise against travel to the country, with the exception of the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border, and says that most British visits pass without incident. However, it warns that westerners, including British nationals, have been the victims of crime, including robbery, date rapes, sexual assault and fraud, with specific reference to “vicious, unprovoked attacks by individuals and gangs” in the Samui archipelago of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, where Mr Miller and Ms Witheridge were killed. It says that violent sexual assaults and robberies against both men and women are reported regularly in the Koh Samui archipelago and the mainland province of Krabi, a hopping-off point to many of Thailand’s islands. “These are particularly common during the monthly Full Moon parties and generally occur late at night near bars,” it says. Never had a problem, knock on wood.
But I know of a few that could be described as a horror story and they never asked for it.

Never had a problem ,I have been visiting Thailand for more than twenty years. I was back packing on my first visit in 1994 and I dare say I was at the very bottom end of the market often staying in the cheapo accomodation found around bus stations and so on. Koh Tao was one of the places I got to on that trip , staying for a month because it was laid back and the pot was good and cheap. The bamboo hut I stayed in at Taraporn was without electricity and I must say I dont recognise Koh Tao as shown in recent photos and it looks more like some back street on Samui now. Organised bar crawls , what a p**s poor experience that must be , and if hanging about with <duck>wits like Sean McKanna is the alternative I can't see the attraction. It's a tourist trap and that is where the danger lays in today's Thailand.

According to news reports and friends in the South of Thailand that's not recommended but they are not targeting farangs. You've got to be in the worng place at the wrong time, as I recall a news story a foreign guy was blown up in a 7/11. A couple of teachers worked in Songkhla and never had issues.

The usual rules apply, but too many people forget the usual rules.

Give them one of your watches or mobiles and the problem will go away.

^^Yup!
I've spent two weeks in Koh Samui as a single woman, and never had a problem. I am cautious enough though and won't walk down a quiet street by myself at night.. won't go in the middle of crowds, and make sure I always have my valuables on me.
Drowning is a problem though. A fourteen year old was killed the other day because of the strong undertows. Red flag means don't go in the water. Some people don't get that!

Its worth commenting on the state of the roads on Samui as well....its a death trap especially for new bike rental people. The undertow at Chaweng...especially the Southern end sees fatalities every year sadly.

The undertow is very bad at the south end. This is where I saw a drowning.. very very sad to be seeing this on vacation.
