In a blow for the digital nomad community - The UK’s human rights watchdog is examining allegations that Butlin’s and Pontin’s are keeping secret “blacklists” of Irish Traveller families, allowing staff to refuse them entry to their holiday camps. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has been informed of two cases involving families from a Traveller background whose attempts to book holidays through the companies were rejected, The Independent understands. One involves John O’Leary, from Camden, in north London, who booked and paid for a holiday at Butlin’s over Christmas for himself, his wife and children and other family members. Six days before they were due to leave, he received a letter informing him that his holiday had been cancelled because he was not on the electoral roll. Probably some quaint British or even English custom from ages ago, but I fail to see the relation between being on the electoral register and wanting to go on holiday. Is voting on the off shore part of Europe that much fun ?
BTW is voting in British still mandatory ? What info can companies get when doing such check on the Election Registry?

Voting is not mandatory. As far as I know, not much - just confirmation that the person lives at the address and how long they have lived there. It will also list other people that live at the same address.

In the Netherlands anyone is supposed to be registered in the 'bevolkings register' (population register?) and that would include your social security number, address, probably official ID cards, etc., etc. Not sure there is a separate 'election register', probably just a subset. Would there be another way for a company to check you live on the address you told them? Been away for 20 years, last time all was done with confirmation letters, or by visiting a travel agency and showing an ID (apart from paying of course). Maybe the online part has made companies more suspicious or careful?

We do get pounded with letters informing us of fines if we fail to do so - I have never heard of anyone being fined. We don't have ID cards in the UK - and while we do have social security numbers, they are not on the electoral roll. Companies such as Equifax have access to the database and they issue credit refernce based upon a points scoring system.

Well done Butlins.
Make sure you arent offered a quote for some tarmacing of the main drive, or caravans needing some repointing done. Kids will be gutted I am sure, no lucky heather or clothes pegs to play with.
