Pineapple company running rings round Andy Hall - A BANGKOK court confiscated the passport of British migrant rights defender Andy Hall and banned him from traveling outside of the country Wednesday. The order was handed down following a bail request submission ahead of his indictment next week (January 18) on criminal defamation and computer crimes offenses charges brought against him by Thai pineapple exporter Natural Fruit Company Ltd. While Hall was granted bail Wednesday, he was ordered not to leave Thailand before the case has been ruled on by the court. The latest in a long battle between them.
It's pure harassment as Andy Hall had no intention of leaving anyway.

I don't care about the case, but interested in the processes.
Am I correct in presuming that the Thai government has confiscated the UK Passport of this man, the Passport which I presume remains the property of the UK Government.
Is this allowed?
Internationally (i.e. outside of Thailand)?

If I remember correctly even Dominique Strauss-Kahn had his passport confiscated to make sure he wouldn't leave the country when he was accused of sexual harassment. Legally so. There are some suggestions that a passport can only be confiscated in order to return it to the issuing government.
Of course your own government can confiscate your passport. Done in Europe a few times now to stop some suspected of wanting to join ISIS. I also just read that in the USA you may lose your passport if you have a IRS certified delinquent tax debt (H.R.22 - FAST Act).
