British actor Alan Rickman, famous for roles in Harry Potter and Love Actually, has died at the age of 69, his family has said. The star won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award in a career which began in the late 1970s. However, he shot to stardom in 1988 when he played Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis's adversary, in Die Hard. Rickman gained legions of new, younger fans for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. A family statement said: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends." He was excellent in Die Hard, and even better as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series. So very sad. I just wish someone could invent a cure for this insidious disease. RIP

RIP My ex father in law was a GP and mother in law had breast cancer. She was "cured" and asked him ( husband) when she could be sure the cancer was no longer a threat. "When you die of something else. ". A somewhat cruel reply. I knew him well and understood why he stated this cold fact. The insidious disease is old age and quite natural for those of three score year and ten. One way or another the clock ticks. There is a new fad of eternal life, if you sit in a sealed room, sterilized and eat the correct diet and drink spring water. Fun!

Excellent actor - great at playing bad guys in particular.
I'm not really a fan of Harry Potter and these commercialised Hollywood wizards which are so far removed from reality it's untrue - just to sell books and movies. That said he did play a good part.
His talent shined much better in most of his other roles though.
69 and cancer - Bowie, Rickman and my dad. Don't really like the pattern there.

Only remember him from his role in Galaxy Quest, a parody on Star Trek. He played Alexander Dane who played Dr. Lazarus of Tev'Meck an "Mak'tar".
Funny movie
