Fusion vs fission: clean, green nuclear energy technologies explainedClean, cheap nuclear energy is often touted as a means to battle climate change. But how close are we to having nuclear plants that fit the clean, green bill? What are the different technologies and what do they offer?More than 10 per cent of the world's electricity currently comes from nuclear power plants. These existing plants all rely on nuclear fission — a chain reaction where uranium atoms are split to release extraordinary amounts of energy and, unfortunately, high levels of radioactive waste. But a different type of nuclear reaction — nuclear fusion — has been the focus of research to develop nuclear power without the radioactive waste problem. ABC ScienceReally well written article outlining the Nuclear (non-fission) alternatives. Worth a read to discover what might be powering our future.

Commerical fusion reactors are at least 20-30 years away from being a reality...if there was a miltary use for fusion, it would be reality already as it would get the funding and development thats needed So for the foreseeable future fission is the only viable option

if there was a miltary use for fusion, it would be reality already as it would get the funding and development thats needed No need to worry. The military already has bombs that use fusion to kill people efficiently. They're known as "thermonuclear" weapons. Been around since 1952. More than 60 years of clean, efficient nuclear annihilation. Thank you, science.
