The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers are to cease print editions in March, leaving only an online edition, the owner has said. Announcing the "digital-only" move, ESI Media said "some redundancies among editorial employees" would be made. But it said there would also be 25 new "digital-content roles". ESI has also confirmed it will sell its sister title, i newspaper, to Johnston Press, for an expected £24m, subject to approval from Johnston's shareholders. Evgeny Lebedev, ESI's owner, said: "This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high-quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers to our online platforms." The last print edition of the Independent will be published on Saturday 26 March, while the last Independent on Sunday will be on 20 March. Continues: www.bbc.com/news/uk-35561145

It's been a while since The Independent was truly independent. For a few years after it's launch you would get balanced, non-partisan coverage from it - not now. Now its slighly left of the Guardian, and that's going some.
Yes, it has a strong online presence, but the parent company, Johnson Press, has serios problems. I've dealt with them before, and they are going from having an arrogant monopoly on local advertising, to being also-rans. They own many of the local newpapers in the UK.

In its early days it was a fine and certainly independent in its political views and darn good news content too. However time passed and in my view it became no more than an oversize tabloid news conduit. The fact it became Russian owned and its editor in chief became a Pakistana has over time led to censorship in a number of areas. I used to post comments regularly as did many others, however it became noticeable that if those comments were out of step with the owners and the editorial teams views they were removed. I still throw my hat in the ring with The Daily Telegraph, those comment have been abrasive and provocative at times as have been the resultant replies both for and against what was commented on. ( Note blether you're not alone in the sometime abuse stakes ) Not once was a post removed apart from a couple of extremely profane comments. Freedom was and still allowed on the D.T.site. The Independent has written its own suicide note and its own epitaph. Ownership details below.

its editor in chief became a Pakistana has over time led to censorship in a number of areas. Uh, Amol Rajan was born in Calcutta, and he's not female, so Pakistana doesn't seem quite right. And anyway, the real damage was done under Chris Blackhurst, who was always a bit of a pompous git with an over-inflated sense of his own ability (or conversely, and under-inflated sense of his own mediocrity). (I went to school with him.)
