How Does One Dog Recognize Another as a Dog? How does one dog instantly recognize another as a dog, not some other animal? Studies of dogs’ ability to discriminate their kind from other animals show that they can do so based on purely visual evidence, even in images. This is even more remarkable in view of the fact that “domestic dogs, Canis familiaris, present the largest phenotypic diversity among domestic mammals,” in the words of one study, done in France and published in 2013 in the journal Animal Cognition. Ranging in size from a tiny Maltese to a giant St. Bernard, and showing myriad differences in coats, snouts, ears, tails and bone structure, dogs might not always appear to belong to one species. Yet other dogs recognize them easily, even in the absence of clues like odor, movement and vocalizations. the French study trained nine dogs to expect a food reward when they picked the dog from side-by-side computer displays of a dog’s face and that of another creature, including domestic and wild cats, sheep, goats, cows, birds, reptiles and humans. They were presented with random selections from 3,000 pairs of uniformly scaled images, none of them repeated. Each dog saw 144 such pairs. Earlier discrimination studies had used far fewer images. What facial features enabled the dogs to pick out other dogs was not studied, a Scientific American blogger said in a review article. Another possible weakness of the research was that it did not include images of closely related species, like foxes and wolves. www.nytimes.com/2016/02/16/science/how-does-one-dog-recognize-another-as-a-dog.html?WT.mc_id=2016-FEBRUARY-OTB-INTL_AUD_DEV-0201-0229&WT.mc_ev=click&ad-keywords=IntlAudDev&_r=0

Yet the linked to article provides no answer whatsoever to the originally posed question. Pointless.
Clearly the scientists concerned hadn't considered ectoplasmic auroras, telepathy and other psychic skills which clearly explain dogs' special abilities; they (the "scientists") are stuck to their own limited version of "the truth" and are ignoring the fact that dogs clearly are extraterrestrial beings sent here by benevolent alien beings to serve and comfort man.
At least, that's my theory, and no scientist can disprove it.
Love me, love my canine visitor from outer space.

Olympic sniffers
Dogs' sense of smell overpowers our own by orders of magnitude—it's 10,000 to 100,000 times as acute, scientists say. "Let's suppose they're just 10,000 times better," says James Walker, former director of the Sensory Research Institute at Florida State University, who, with several colleagues, came up with that jaw-dropping estimate during a rigorously designed, oft-cited study. "If you make the analogy to vision, what you and I can see at a third of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well."
All women smell the same (as opposed to dogs or men). All dogs smell the same as opposed to humans or other animals. They can smell a dog.

Stupid question.. So why the hell to they sniff each others butt? Long ago, as the story goes, dogs were allowed into bars but they had to hang their arseholes up on the arsehanger or they wouldn't get served. One night the fire alarm went off and the place started getting lapped up in flames. The dogs all ran to the hanger to get their arseholes but in the ensuing confusion they all grabbed the wrong a_hole. So to this day they still go around sniffing each other's a-holes in the hope they can find their own. Now I want to know why dogs want to hump my leg.

I was involved in this study as I was a struggling actor before I cynically had Basil written out of neighbours.Mr Walker is correct.

The same way humans recognise another human, or any life form recognises its own kind.

The other week showed how clever they are on TV. An owner of a dog put a treat on the floor. Had the dog sit and told to stay. The dog obeyed, until released to eat the treat. Repeated the test, but he closed his eyes. Even though told to stay, the dog ate the treat.
