When you attend an event, what is the standard amount of baht you put in an envelope? at a... 1. Wedding 2. Funeral 3. Monk initiation thing
Are the amounts different in bangkok than it is in the village?
Are the amounts at each event recorded in a book, with your name, when you give it?

Keep a log of what you collect at funerals because you're expected to return the offering.
We had a funeral last year and donations were in excess of 120k, with the older neighbours passing I think we still have 15 or so that we will have to make a contribution, most were 1000 baht donations, a few were 2000 and the idiot farang neighbour gave 5000 which I spent on a pressure washer to clean his dogs shit off the street, when he goes I'll donate the pressure washer.

So, if I don't really know the person getting married, and I am going with my wife and kid, I would give 1000 baht for all 3 of us, in a village? Who was the invite addressed to? In the village, , 1,000 baht way too much, 500 plenty, thats if you even bother going to the wedding of someone you dont really know. Is it a family member, friend of your wife, or a work colleague of your wife? Get your wife or her mother to dig out the family ledger and find out how much this person gave at one of the events they attended, reply in kind with the same amount. Yes the amount is recorded, thats why the envelope addressed to you is the one thats used to return to the sender with the donation. One of the best I ever saw was an excell spreadsheet on a lap top right at the entrance to the event, the invited had been listed and each envelope donation was recorded, that way they could see who didnt donate, and who donated what, also gave an instant update on total amounf donated. Upcountry it will be done old skool with pen and paper in a ledger.

When it comes to funerals it does depend on how many days the Funeral will go over. Some are 3 days ... some last up to a week. If it's in a Village, a lot of the money comes back through donations. If you are the most respected (oldest, richest) person, sure, make a contribution. If you are very close to the deceased, then make it a decent one, I'm thinking in the order 5 - 10K But don't get conned into paying for the whole shooting match or too much.

Funeral/cremation tamboons never last a week. 1-2-3 days max.

I know they will offer the refrigerated option and told that's for a 5 day ceremony, I've only attended as you said maximum 3 day events, never a 7 day. His sums are also off. Best let the Thais advise what's proper, not sure the word "conned" is appropriate.

This is what I was told ... up to a week I am happy to learn from the old Thai hands .. I can admit when I have made a mistake, as sometimes a man has to do.

Dont forget to ask if the poor sadly departed was insured.
Also, some of these villages have some sort of insurance scheme set up.
5-10k is taking the p**s.
I have been to funerals where the whole shebang has cost about 25k baht.
Storage in a fridge at a temple, 1,000 baht per day.

Thus is the reason most have brief tamboons of this nature....because of the modern and unnecessary costs. The Wats are a business today. Bastards and charlatans.
One can't even consider any sort of spiritual ceremony without some sort of financial offerings. Remembering the good old days when an offering of food or sundries would be quite sufficient.
Becoming a monk is more akin to a profession [with salary] than a community vocation. A social fall back for those who can't attain work.
And we wonder why many take out loans for the large tamboons [funeral, weddings, 100 day, etc]
