I'm trying to join the dots on this one.
The president of Vietnam and the leader of the Viet Communist Party, Ho Chi Minh, lived in Thailand for several years not far from Udon Thani.
The house (more of a mansion ), is now a tourist attraction, including the dwelling next door which he trained Viet troops in.
I'm not clear exactly how long he lived there, the reports range from 2 years to 7 years, and the locations vary also in that he resided in several places.
Now just to add to the confusion is another tourist attraction of uncle Ho's, another Thai style house he used as a hideout during the Vietnam war.
So why was Thailand supporting this man? Actually going as far to help hide him, when not faraway US troops were using Thailand also as a base.
Anyone know?

Also why is there large statue type tributes to Ho Chi Minh in Udon?
Makes no sense considering the Americans had an air base there also.

Since Thailand was actively involved in trying to kill Ho Chi Minh and his troops were violating Thai borders and killing people I guess it a statue to the one that got away. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_border_raids_in_Thailand75% of the bombing raids into Hanoi during the war originated from Thai airfields.

Well I'm still confused? Thailand was welcoming Ho, yet also allowing American air force to run missions, then Viet cong we're also killing Thais by sneaking across the border. It doesn't add up to me. Then if it was the one that got away, how was he allowed to hideout in Thailand? Even if it was done covertly, surely the locals would have shot him?

No it was years not months. Check the Bkk post link and that's just 1 house. So anyway I see the years don't add up to Vietnam war era, but then why was Ho hiding out in Thailand? And why would Thailand erect memorials to him that stand today?

Hồ betrayed Phan Bội Châu, the famous leader of a rival revolutionary faction and his father's old friend, to French Secret Service agents in Shanghai for 100,000 piastres and he got out of town. Statue was a marketing idea. The Vietnamese Minister of Information and Communications has presented a statue of late President Ho Chi Minh to Trinh Cao Son, General Secretary of the Vietnamese Association Executive Board in Nakhon Phanom province, northeastern Thailand.
