how is not carrying a passport an effort to eliminate tourism, as a tourist one is obligated to follow the laws of the land on is visiting ? more of the issue is, there is no such law as such which says one must carry your PP anyway, the law says something along the lines of you must be able to identify yourself and one suspects be able to confirm your visa status, and will concede a pp is most likely the easiest way to do this...but the fact remains there is no law which mandates you carry your pp with your at all times

Word of mouth advertising is the best kind. The tourists don't have to carry passports and the military knows that - they took them down to the cop station to harass them - simple.

I have never read any legal text saying that tourists don't have to carry their passport. I have read immigration say that a photocopy of relevant passport and "inward," stamp should suffice.

UK governmnet link www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/local-laws-and-customs By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport on request.

Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport on request. Deputy Commander and Police Colonel Voravat Amornvivat, a senior official at Immigration headquarters in Bangkok. Deputy Commander Voravat wanted to reassure the expat community in Thailand about the current situation. He told Thaivsia.com that information in an article published by The Nation on 31 July 2014, was incorrect. Deputy Commander Voravat confirmed that foreign tourists and expats do not need to carry their passports with them at all times. He said that tourists can of course leave their passports locked in their hotel safe and enjoy their holiday in Thailand without worrying about the need to carry their original passport. www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/747736-no-need-to-worry-says-bangkok-immigration-commander/

Its doesnt say anything about having to have a passport on you at all times. Referenced in the above document - www.imm3.police.go.th seems does not exist. It defaults to a Thai immigration site in Thai language. Wonder where it's from? Some questions, the website ,belongs to which country,if it is thailand,is it really from the Royal Thai Police,or is it just a guy who made a joke?Anyways i talked to 5 people from the immigration 3 of room 102,nobody of them knows that website. www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/24122-website-of-immigration-timbuktu-or-thailand/

No one awywhere on any website I have read has ever been able to provide a link in Thai that says passports (หนังสือเดินทาง) nang sue dern tang. must be carried.
We actually have two seperate issues going on here, first IMHO, wheels within wheels, theres a new sheriff in town and he wats to flex his muscles.
Two, each officer will interpret it diffferently.
I live beside a police station, there must be about 400 officers drive by me daily. I leave the house and walk by another police station, heck I even walk by police as they are sat eating and drinking.
Not once have I ever been stopped.
Uh oh, I dont live in a tourist or farang enclave part of Bkk.

It doesn't matter what the written law is, whether noted or not, it's made to fit any circumstance that feels fit by the officers, and their superiors.
As a farang that can speak Thai they know you may or your other half may have 'bro's' which are bigger fish than them.
The normal tourist is brine shrimp.

Please refer me to the Thai law that says you must carry a passport. I'll stick with the British link, knowing that if they can say to me - "did you not read our website that its a legal requirement?"

Please refer me to the Thai law that says you must carry a passport. I'll stick with the British link, knowing that if they can say to me - "did you not read our website that its a legal requirement?" Ever had your passport stolen? Aha I thought not. I used to carry my passport till I got drugged and rolled and my passport stolen. In America two stolen passports and they only issue you another for a year. So I'll stick with the Thai immigration officer as what he says makes more sense than the British link which makes no sense at all. Of course I have a Thai wife and family and her sister and father work for the government..... but I'd do the same thing even if I was alone. Carrying your passport 24/7 is just plain ******. Living in Thailand without a safety deposit box or large bolted down safe is also *******. I have also asked at immigration and they confirmed what the Colonel from Bangkok said. Let's look at a video from the Bangkok Post www.bangkokpost.com/vdo/expat-advice/650676/carrying-your-passport
