Think of it this way, it doesn't matter what one personally chooses to do, carry or don't carry either way has consequences, don't carry and the plods may feel inclined to lock you up, carry it and one runs the risk of getting it lifted, its down to personal choice which is the lessor of the two evils, or of course you could have the ultimate nightmare of getting your PP lift and then plods arresting you shortly after
I personally don't carry my passport and never have done

Why I DO NOT carry my passport.
Have it nicked or lose it, bureaucratic nightmare.
Get police report, head to Brit House and pay 5000 baht for a yellow pasport, head to CW for an exit permit, 1,900 baht. Book return fare to the UK, 50,000 baht. Apply for new passport in Uk,another 5,000 baht? Apply for a single NON O visa at consulate, these days probaly another 5,000 baht?
Come back and start the bureaucratic process all over again.
No thanks, off to the station for me, pay some tea money, or wait for the mrs to show up with passport and walk for free.
Just as a matter of interest, how many of these exercises in futility have ever found anyone here illegally?
Over stayers, eff them, they get what they deserve.
I drive frequently from the Cambodian border area (Chanthaburi) I am just waved on, the police are looking for illegals.
Have been stopped many times driving from Korat, never once asked for a passport, 9 times out of ten, waved on, once had to pop the boot (trunk to our Colonial friends) never had a problem.
This seems to be peculiar to a certain district in Bkk.
How many in the Lumpini district have ever had the same problem?
