In a bit of and odd mood, so bear with me. Just like that, I'm no longer a teacher in Thailand. Was expecting to be dancing out the door but the feeling is more bittersweet. Will not miss the pointless admin, office politics and gossip. Will miss the little hooligans that were in my care; been a real privilege to see them grow up, become confident and literate. Will miss the laughs, smiles, conversations and ridiculous creative writing efforts that the submit. Budapest bound in 8 days; now that is exciting. Factoid: The last two fatal Aeroflot crashes were due to a drunk pilot and a pilot who let his teenage son 'have a go' at being a pilot. Mildly concerned.

Enjoy the next leg of your teaching journey in Budapest, I think you've made an inspired choice going there.

Enjoy Budapest if you get there . That you'll miss parts is a sign of professionalism and commitment. I did a 4 week TEFL course during a year out from work. We did 5 days teaching practice at a local school. I really enjoyed the course and the practical teaching you mention. The other side you mention are some of the things that put me off.

Enjoying it greatly. Actually on the way to an interview at a private school. Enjoying the simple pleasure of a well organised transport system

So much to my surprise I seem to have pretty much landed the job I wanted all along in Budapest. The interview was enjoyable and the school itself is just stunning. I was fairly privileged in my own schooling having gone to public school. This place made my place of education look like barn 555

So does Budapest win hands down over Mandalay? Sounds great actually, you've been wanting this for years.

I am off to a thermal bath to ponder on that very question. I am leaning towards Budapest as I liked what I saw at the school. Both staff and students were very open and welcoming- which for me is one of the key things I look for. Decent enough salary for Budapest- it would be a struggle to find anything that paid more. Interestingly it would seem that there is little lesson planning to do as that was outsourced. The only issue is the job starts in September. Not really sure what do do until then. Advantage of Myanmar is that it starts in June. Lots to think about.

We did 5 days teaching practice at a local school. I really enjoyed the course and the practical teaching you mention. The other side you mention are some of the things that put me off. When I first came to Thailand in 2005 I did a TEFL course down in Ban Phe and part of that was also 5 days teaching at a local school. First thing I noticed was how keen the girls were to participate, and how the boys seemed like they just did-not-want-to-be-there. Had me thinking what a challenge it would be to get the boys interested and involved. Did not quite finish the course because I got very sick during the 4th week and went back to Chiang Rai to get over it. Never did get around to finishing it. Good luck in Budapest pathumseb, hope it all goes well for you. Send us a postcard, pictures of sausages, cabbage and big glasses of beer etc.

Sounds like we did the same course Mick. Really enjoyed it. Definitely a difference in attitude for the majority of girls vs boys. Generalising I think Thai boys often get spoilt by the parents and rarely have their behaviour reigned in. Girls on the other hand are reminded and expected to be polite and well mannered.

Nice post, refreshing to see a positive post about teaching. It is something I have never tried in Thailand but have thought about giving it a whirl at some point in the future.
Hungary, especially Budapest, is ace in the summer and especially so if you like Metal music. Fanny all over the place...
All the best with your future pal.

Thanks! Actually decided to take the offer in Mandalay on account of all the nice benefits they throw in. Struck me today the only reason I am leaving Thailand is purely financial. As for the Thais and T-Land itself: love em to bits! I'll be back soon enough at a guess. Budapest in summer is amazing- a morning soak in the bath, drinking by the Danube by mid-afternoon, slap up dinner and then off to enjoy some live music. Great city when the sun is out!
