"UK government launches initiative against online adblocking, compares it to piracy With the rise of users employing adblocking technology in the last 18 months, the conflict between online publishers and users has been mostly left as a problem for the market to resolve organically. However today the UK’s culture secretary John Whittingdale has announced that the British government intends to ‘do something’ on the issue, describing the practice as a ‘modern day protection racket’, and comparing it to piracy." thestack.com/world/2016/03/02/uk-government-launches-initiative-against-online-adblocking-compares-it-to-piracy/

There would be little or no adblocking if so many advertisements weren't so obtrusive.
Quite frankly, I don't know how anybody can tolerate a site such as thaivisa.com without adblocking.
Even this site, where most of the advertisements are relatively unobtrusive, there are still some jarring animated ones, which is enough for me to reenable adblocking for here.

If all block ads sponsoring of sites will drop and 'free' content might get a monetary price instead of a 'bandwidth' price.

I'd have thought the UK government should have better things to do with it's time. Especially as it seems to have the issue the wrong way round From where we are today, it's simple. Let market forces between the supplier and consumer decide: If the supplier has an issue, the supplier or someone else makes it a condition of reading their content that the reader either look at the whole lot or is stopped from looking at all. Or someone pays not to receive all the crap and intrusions. Myself, I don't want the ads and all the spam, crap and intrusions that come with it. If the ads etc are a condition and they annoy me I'd likely choose not to look at their site and stop reading full stop. Very rare I'd pay for without adds. Very few internet sites worth paying for anyway. The real issue is how they are allowed to spam you, track things on your computer etc, and invade your privacy. At least with people cold calling over the phone you can just put your phone down, or on TV if ads come up you can just switch channels. Don't see why they should be forced on you and more from the internet.

I fly on Virtual Airlines which are affialiate with an online organisation Like VATSIM few of these sltes have or need any advertising or if they do it is restricted too a list of organsisations that provide sponsorships. THere is plenty of content which does not need adertising to run,

The way I see it uncle, is some sites give me lots of free stuff so if running a few ads is their way of covering the costs I don't mind the ads, in fact I click on them at times as well. But I can understand anyone getting annoyed by them, I have been to sites that scare people away with the amount of ads displayed. The flashing ones are the worst.

Some of them should carry epilesy warnings.
I rarely get any as I have ABP installed but the ones that pop up in a new window with sound just after ive blasted out some music annoy me most.
Even worse when its past midnight and ive forgot to turn off the hifi, its startling.

Even some of the avatars on the duck site like that one with a horse with chattering teeth (I think he changed it when he became a mod) drove me nuts.

Welcome to the world of digital pikery.
If your website is so good why do you need cold callers?
I belong to various forums (music) no bloody crap like this on them, the mods etc know, p**s us off, we are off elsewhere.
Why does your forum exist? To sell advertising space or exchange information?

It's not just forums. It's the same with news sites, info sites. Of course I understand that newspapers are in it for selling papers or the digital equivalent.

^^^,newspapers, how quaint, does anyone read them these days?
Let me just stroll out to the backyard and fill the bucket up with some coal, light a fire and head for bed.

They are free to sell if that is their business model. That means there're also free to advertise, just like they do in the dead tree version. If you don't like the advertisements in their newspaper then don't buy it.

If you don't like the advertisements in their newspaper then don't buy it. They may put a paywall up to stop people accessing. They may not dictate that I must not block adds on my computer or stop the companies providing blocking or try to do as the music industry did with cassette tapes try to get a levy placed on blank ones to be paid for them. Their control stops when they upload to the internet. From then it is me who is paying so it is me who should have control.
