How long are you going for? Which cities do you plan on visiting?
For me an ideal short break would be to fly into Tokyo, spend a few days there, then take the Shinkansen to Kyoto (my favourite city in Japan) for a few more days, then take it on to Hiroshima for a couple of days (visiting Miyajima) and fly out of there.

I haven't been, but hope to at some point soon. I hear Kyoto and Osaka are quite nice to visit. Kyoto has all of the temples and history. I hear it is quite costly in Japan compared to even Korea. I'd like to go just for the food. I know family and friends that have lived there and all comment on how clean they are. This is apparently a great forum to learn more about Japan. forum.gaijinpot.com/

I know family and friends that have lived there and all comment on how clean they are. That's very much a "yes and no" situation. If you mean personal hygiene, the Japanese are fanatical about it. If you mean the cleanliness on the streets, then try wandering around some districts of Tokyo late evening. Pools of vomit and discarded cigarette butts everywhere. However, there are cleaners who work through the night so by the next morning it's all clean again.

The shinkansen to Kyoto is an absolute must. Hope for good weather.

Definitely a topic of interest to me. The Mrs wants to go to Japan in summer - July/ August - for our holidays instead of the usual UK. Only time I've ever been was around 1998/1999 for a job interview for a couple of days. Liked what I saw. Also very nice was that a friend arranged for one of his Japanese wife's friends to take me to a few places. She would hardly let me pay for anything. A little bit different to Thailand . Funnily enough I got the job, but chose another job in Thailand instead. With hindsight Japan might have been cheaper

If you are an electronis/music geek, take your Amex card with you.
Tokyo is like something out of Blade Runner.
If you fancy a bit of something else, forget, prices are off the chart, thats why the Japanese head to Thailand.
Fletch, ref Japan, knew a mug who knocked back a Japanese girl, broke her heart. Instant Karma, said mug now spends his time up North with his mrs and her brood regretting every minute.
