I was stopped today by the police on a road check. Well not stopped, the officer could not see my tax disc one of the new official road stops.Saw it on the dash board, tax disc that is, smiled and waved on. I have in twenty years only ever been stopped before. Both times I was technically at fault; wrong lane, signage.A laugh and a few baht. One such event I have written about at length, here or somewhere. Not bothered to repeat. All very smooth and smiles. How can one be in Thailand for a few days and find confrontation?

The problem is that many people who come here come or came here came because they liked that which they saw, Well a few months down the road some of those people suddenly come to terms with the fact that the daily grind is as hum drum here as it was in their home country.
Suddenly the local peasants are not looking up to them as the great white gods superior in every way to the local indigenous population.
Shop assistants are classified as retarded, lazy, pollution is suddenly a problem, the language ,officialdom etc etc.
Then when a policeman has the impertinence to stop you, a big white chief, well they are all after some of the folding stuff eh what.
That's when some types who came here because they liked what they saw then want to change it to what they left behind and nowthey want.
I always fond and still do that a cheerful face a smile will carry you through all situations especially if you're a foreigner, the ball is in your court, play the right way no problems.
I spent a little time in uniformed branch police in the U.K. many a year back, and if the response one got from ones questions was easy going banter all was well and whoever had been stopped was soon on their way again.
Now if someone was impolite etc, well all sorts of questions and problems could arise.
Play a silly game and the consequences were there to be had.
Smile and the world smiles back. Snarl and the world bites back

One of the best phrases any farang living here can learn is, ขอโทษครับ ผิดเป็นผม Kor tord krap, pit ben phom, sorry, its my fault, its almost like a get out of jail card. Have been stopped many times, always my fault, most times waved on by police, ฝรั่งไม่รู้เรื่อง are the best words you want to hear, the farang doesnt know, . As mentioned above, if you go looking for trouble, trouble will find you. Ee gaew (name of my dog) in the front seat knocking shit out my bollocks has helped on a few occasions. Was ordered to pull over, out the car, spewed my ring up, police p**sing themselves. Sit down smoke a cigarette, jai yen yen na, . They laughed as they wished me good luck, I could hardly walk, nothing more than their entertainment for the evening.

I know it was millions of years ago, in Pattaya early morning, parked my motorcycle. " You not park here". "No problem, we look after,". Came back, police had locked my bike. "What the F,"! "Sorry, we take you to police,". "How much?".
Police came, parked his bike and I locked it.Just as he had locked mine, "You, park same me,me we laugh and screw that bugger that said it was ok." "Come, we all laugh and I lose,", but I win.

I totally agree that if one is extremely polite with the BIB, they find it almost impossible to be otherwise. I used to pretend I didn't speak Thai but now I go the other way and ask about their family etc. They warm to it always and whatever the intitial reason for the flag down, just fades away! Complimenting them on their friendly, professional manner is an absolute killer!!!!!

Only been asked to produce my licence, and passport once. All other times they wave me down, and see me. Wave me on, they don't want to embarrass themselves by showing the guys under them they no speak Angrit.

Everyone is happy.
