They should be thankful...my parents took me to Glenrothes. "smokie escaped from a maximum security penitentiary......" fairly easy for a five year old to squeeze through the bars using minimum butter and a trampoline. Take note Slipper of the Yard! On a serious note....are there no greens in Issan? Eat your broccoli and other crap....and you can grow big and tall and walk into signposts just like smokie does!

The diet of the poorest people is largely nam phrik with vast quantities of rice. Greens and fish/meat are simply unaffordable for many. The sheer depth of poverty is almost simply unimaginable. There are still children dying of malaria because their families can't afford the transport to the nearest hospital. Given the income inequality, it's hardly surprising that those in the North East support the Red Shirts and the populist former Prime Minister and his puppet crab sister.

It seems those not of a certain coloured shirt have arrived too late to the table to grasp the notion of providing at least basic sustenance of growth to ALL your people....else your democracy can never flourish. Sad and the work of many years of pigs at troughs....it can be seen to varying degrees throughout the world. Sounds bad up in Issan right now though.

Issan climatically can get really bad but the no greens is not a function of poverty. It is one of taste. The problem with malaria is one of not controling them.

It's simply sad. I was ripped to shreds on tvf for saying the 30 something girl across the street moved to Norway and left her 9yo son in the village to be looked after by yai and dar. Mum sends sweet fa, grandparents do sweet fa for him so since he was 5 I've helped him. Not much, just bits here and there and that's when I'm there. Example he really wanted a t-shirt for the ride for dad bike day thing, so I got the t-shirt for him so he could ride with the village and have the same shirt. Cost 80b or something piddly, no big deal.
Anyway back to mum dumping him to move to Norway, I was told I should butt out and mind my own business. I swear I hurt a fair few feelings on that thread. For the record I drilled the mum last songkran when she came home. Bitch.

They eat that more than meat. Veg is 10b for a big bunch of any veg at the markets. Its meat that's expensive for them.

In many case it's not poverty but tradition that dictates the diet, plenty of fish and meet around but in many cases the older folks cling to the old ways.See the younger folk who have been away from the village and you see a very different eating pattern The absence of decent shops for a start limited and still does to a degree what's available to eat, yes the fields supply a goodly range of vegetable products free of charge, also, rats, snakes and assorted other edible creatures too,the river has fish and frogs. Bugs are staple too and a good source of protein in many cases too. Over the years I've eaten some very strange food in Isaan and often wondered what it may have been when it was alive, that is of course if it was ever even alive in the first place Still here and living so perhaps the diet isn't too bad once you're used to it. Snake and ale pie, frog and chips the culinary gastronomic delights of Isaan food are never ending

I used to carry my school books in a plastic bag from Fine Fare every day.
Used to hold it in front of me to hide the holes in the knees of my trousers.
These things didnt bother me really...just part and parcel of life.
Nowadays if I want a suit...pair of shoes...bottle of champagne I just order it.
Life is good to those who work hard and smile while doing it I have found.
