Three killed and about 20 injured when a train struck a bus at a railway crossingThe driver of a bus and two passengers were killed and about 20 other passengers were injured when a train slammed into the bus at a railway crossing in Nakhon Pathom’s Nakhon Chaisri district Sunday morning. Police said that the accident took place at about 7.30 am when the bus driver tried to drive past the railway crossing as the Bangkok-Nam Tok train was approaching. There was no barricade at the crossing, said the police. The State Railway of Thailand explained later that the automatic barricade at the railway crossing was not yet operational but there are already traffic signs at the spot. Killed at the scene were the bus driver and two passengers. 23 other passengers were also injured and all of them were later taken to nearby hospitals. Mechanics and workers took several hours to remove the bus and to fix the tracks before normal train services through the crossing resumed. According to the Bangkok Post "Police wonder if the driver was impaired after the collision at a crossing with excellent views killed the bus driver and two passengers".
Uh, yes he was impaired after the collision: he was fairly dead. They probably meant "before".

Comments on the old place, such as. "Why didn't the train slow down for the crossing?" Have they never heard of timetables? Plus it's not like a train can stop on a six pence. The terror on the bus is hard to imagine.

A more valid comment would be "why wasn't there a working barrier"? It's not like this was one of the illegal crossings which generate a fair number of deaths each year.

Many railway crossings in Australia and even from films I have seen the US do not have gates or barriers just signs. The law requires the vehicle to give way to te train. After a rather nasty crash invoving a Greyhound Bus in Australia the practice..or law required they came to a fulll stop and opened the door to check if they could hear or see a train.
