Ten-ton, 30-foot high 'big mango' disappears from small town in Australia.
Six people seen taking vast tourist landmark in the dead of night in suspected bizarre publicity stunt. Staff at the tourist information centre in the small town of Bowen in north Queensland arrived at work in the morning and claimed to have been stunned to discover that the Big Mango had vanished.
A ten-ton, 30-foot high fake mango has disappeared from a small town in Australia, prompting speculation the popular tourist attraction was either stolen in a bizarre heist or removed as a publicity stunt. Staff at the tourist information centre in the small town of Bowen in north Queensland arrived at work in the morning and claimed to have been stunned to discover that the Big Mango had vanished.
Security footage later showed about six culprits approaching the fibreglass mango with a crane and heavy machinery between midnight and 2am. “No one in their right mind considered for a second that someone would take a giant three-storey-high, 10-ton mango,” said Paul McLaughlin, from Bowen’s tourism centre. “It’s not like it’s something that can be easily hidden.”
One of our mangos is missing: the mango vanished between midnight and 2am Australian towns and tourist parks are renowned for installing strange oversized objects as tourist landmarks. The list of “big things” includes a big banana, a big prawn, a big merino sheep, a big avocado, a big beer can, a big pineapple and a big trout.
The Big Mango was apparently prised from the concrete platform on which it has stood since 2002. It is valued at $AUS90,000 (£49,000). However, police had reportedly not received a complaint and were not investigating the theft, prompting speculation the disappearance may be a publicity stunt. Mr McLaughlin said he was first notified about the disappearing mango from a staff member. “I thought she was joking to start off with, but she said 'no, I'm serious', so I've come out and sure enough the mango has disappeared,” he said.
