Just saw this story on one of the Australian news sites - www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/health-safety/the-statistics-that-should-shock-the-world/news-story/4583c8cae35ebc3f51a25ac7d972f6a2Made me wonder if there are two worlds there because the one I live in when I am in Thailand is nothing like that, hardly ever see any violence and crime etc. My wife and I often drive from CM down to Surin, via Phetchabun, to visit the Beverley Hillbillies (her crazy family) and we usually only see a couple of accidents going either way (used to see a lot more between CM and CR on road 118) Maybe I am just living the quiet life these days and don't haunt the girly bars, pubs and clubs like I did when I first went over there. And I certainly don't go on the roads during the holiday season. If it was as bad as it sounds when you read about it in the news I would not leave the house. |

The reporter would be even more shocked, if he knew the road death toll was right in the ball park for what happens daily.

Except for the major bust by Thailand's finest police force- the topless dreadlocks guy. Hope that major major bust was counted.

Read the report tonight of the 400 plus carnage, mostly Somchai's son on a motorcyce or Somchai in his pickup.
Then the telling fact most carnage between 4 and 8 pm. What a surprise! The police go home at 4 pm and leave the streets to the racers; yes road racing.
Near our house is a wonderful straight, and Somchai holds the record at present until broken by another .The noise of the souped up two strokes can be heard for miles even at the two police stations, two districts which cross on the straight.
Strange.

The girls do not ride pillion, that would slow the buzz machine down; they cheer on somchai and the winner gets the girl. I know, the cabbage won one that way. Nice girl, she lived with us for a while, nice house, why not.
Soon realized cabbage was a moron and left.
Oh and the police run the races.

A few years ago, one young idiot, about 13 or 14. Decided it was a good idea to use the sleeves on his jacket, to tie around his neck. Wore it like a cape. Gets on his bike laid front down. He goes tear arseing down the road. Jacket blows over and wraps itself around his head. Smacks into a big tree, which never even flinched. That was the end of one version of the idiot gene.

I very rarely drive at night, too many idiots out there for me. At least during the day you have a chance of seeing them coming, and avoiding them. Cannot believe how many morons ride bikes at night with no lights.
One time we were driving down to Surin and we were running late and ended up driving after dark. Found out one of my headlights was not working, had probably been like that for years.

Cannot believe how many morons ride bikes at night with no lights. One time we were driving down to Surin and we were running late and ended up driving after dark. Found out one of my headlights was not working, had probably been like that for years. The reason I hate driving at night is cos it's like driving through a bloody disco. |
