8 charges have been filed by police, none related to the deaths. The families will have to prosecute him themselves. Or find a Thai type solution.

It will end up in negotiations over what their dead kids life is worth as a cash value. Can you imagine trying to put a price on your child?

I have read the families are refusing to negotiate a deal. Their lawyer is letting him talk himself into a manslaughter charge. Old v new money.

Yes I can't see a pre-meditated charge flying either. Probably just trying to put more pressure on to get a better settlement as the penalty would no doubt be higher. Hopefully some of the other charges will stick. I wonder whether they are criminal or civil charges and whether they bring any meaningful penalties and compensation.
As for what usually happens: rich kid blatantly at fault, gets off largely scot free. Small amounts of compensation paid as an agreed settlement to the families. Often a few hundred thousand baht each. If the families are poor that seems like a lot of money to them, particularly if they don't have any real understanding of finance. So they take it. Financiallly they're particularly vulnerable if it's a breadwinner killed as not only do they often have no-one to replace that breadwinner, but they also don't know how to calculate a real cost on that, allowing for inflation, nor manage a lump sum etc etc. Non-financially is also a tragedy.
I'm sure in many cases there are also various pay-offs to police, legal officials, victims relatives, witnesses andd anyone else involved etc so the full course of justice never gets a look.
So all in all it's usually a tragedy and a shame for the victims, and they will be suffering for the rest of their lives emotionally and financially, while the criminals get away largely scot free. Some of them also repeat their behaviour, so not as if they learn from it (or have to)

I guess the real news would be if someone from a rich family who kills people from reckless driving actually received some form of meaningful punishment and jail term. Not holding my breath though...

Never been heard off, off the top of my head I can remember Mercedes Man who polughed into a bus stop on Suk Rd, produced some Drs note and walked. Honda Civic girl on the Rangsit Rd walked after behind closed doors talks. Still waiting for the Mor Moo case, remember the woman Dr who was beaten by some army guy?

The last Mercedes driver who killed someone was that actress. Wonder how much she paid the dead cops family after she killed him?

Unfortunately, even if they hung this moron in the main square it would not deter future hi-so asswipes like this one from driving around Thailand with gay abandon, like they own the roads and have power over everyone using them. Not hard to understand why the poor have risen up against the upper classes periodically throughout history. Think - "Let them eat cake", although in Thailand it is "Get out of the way of my 5 million baht Merc, Somchai" !
