People want Beachy McBeachface to be the name of an Australian council
The fallout from the legendary Boaty McBoatface is far from running out of steam.
The people in Australia have spoken and they want a council in the eastern suburbs of Sydney to be named none other than: Beachy McBeachface. It makes perfect sense. The area has a lot of beaches, just like Boaty McBoatface was a boat.
Three councils in Sydney's eastern suburbs are joining together and they need a name to see them into the future. To pick the most appropriate title, Waverly Council started running a survey to decide the name.
In a poll run alongside the survey by Fairfax Media, the public scoffed in the face of options such as the Great Bays Council, Ocean Wave Council and Eastside, which sound more like knockoff surf brands than anything worth visiting.
Clearly the new council deserves a more dynamic, exciting name. According to the Fairfax poll, the people made it clear what they want: Beachy McBeachface.
A spokesperson told the publication that out of the 200 actual entries so far, the most popular is the agreeable-sounding Eastern Beaches Council. Yawn.
Unfortunately the poll, which closed on Wednesday with 61% voting for Beachy McBeachface, is just a poll after all. "These polls are not scientific and reflect the opinion only of visitors who have chosen to participate," a disclaimer sadly reads at the bottom.
The council has also implemented ways to suppress public support for the fantastic name, with a panel, consisting of mayors and representatives from the participating Waverley and Randwick councils, to pick three names from the suggestions.
One would hope the panel will pick well and in the public interest when the name Beachy McBeachface eventually makes its way onto their desk. We can only dream.
