"Japan wants foreign tourists to avoid 'public flatulence' A Japanese tourism board has called on foreign tourists to refrain from public "belching or flatulence" in an etiquette guide which was hastily rewritten, reportedly after complaints from a Chinese resident. The Hokkaido Tourism Organization, which represents Japan's northern-most island, published a downloadable brochure on its website, with polite instructions on everything from public bathing to using a Japanese toilet. Helpfully, it even dedicated an entire section to protocol for avoiding bodily functions. "Japanese etiquette is based on avoiding causing discomfort or nuisance to others," the guide points out. "Accordingly, Japanese will avoid bodily functions such as belching or flatulence in public entirely, or perform bodily functions as discreetly as possible."" sg.news.yahoo.com/japan-wants-foreign-tourists-avoid-public-flatulence-093105715.html

Yet nose-blowing in public is considered beyond the pale in Japanese culture, whilst loudly snorting up snot is perfectly acceptable. And once they go to the toilet, they blow their noses with such astounding vigour it turns my stomach. (I was a director/executive director for a couple of Japanese investment banks for around two decades, so this is based upon personal experience.)

Never been to Japan so know nothing about their habits but I would be very surprised if the Chinese ever had the audacity to ask foreigners to "mind their manners".
Their disgusting habits are world class, even in restaurants. I did three trips there and in the end I was buying food in supermarkets and eating it in my hotel room.
..............."after complaints from a Chinese resident"................ Ha Ha, as if the Japanese would give a toss what the Chinese think.
