There's nothing suspicious about this. Website owners like to track activity so (a) they can target advertising, and (b) understand user behaviour so they can optimise their website for traffic. Most sites uses cookies for this purpose, but some users block cookies, so some sites use customised URLs as an alternative which is less prone to blocking.
As for knowing where you came from, the HTTP headers sent with every page request include a "referer" header (a misspelling for "referrer") which shows which page linked to the page now being fetched. No mystery there.

^^| I agree no mystery, just another example of how we're tracked in a 'friendly' manner. Of course I can reject cookies, but that means sites will not give me a page. 'Delete cookies on exit browser' seems the most useful manner, although one might choose to manually clear the cookie cache, like after frequenting some interesting forums
